Engineering
Engineering affects every facet of modern living and provides a multitude of opportunities to those suitably equipped to engage with it.
Engineering at Cedars aims to:
- Provide opportunities for students to be creative through the practical application of engineering, scientific and mathematical knowledge.
- Equip students with the necessary practical skills and theoretical knowledge to engage with technical challenges and manufacture engineered solutions.
- Develop determination, independence and resilience alongside adaptability, common sense and the confidence to take calculated risks.
- Support students who aspire to future careers in engineering and enable all students to make an educated contribution to determining how engineering can be best utilised for the future betterment of humankind.
- Nurture an appreciation and respect for the infinitely diverse range of engineering practitioners and their work. Immerse students in technical language and develop their capacity to interpret both written and graphic communication.
Our hope is that through studying engineering students are able to utilise a range of skills which will broaden their prospects and secure their success in both employment and further academic study.
“Engineering is not merely knowing and being knowledgeable, like a walking encyclopaedia; engineering is not merely analysis; engineering is not merely the possession of the capacity to get elegant solutions to non-existent engineering problems; engineering is practising the art of the organising forces of technological change… Engineers operate at the interface between science and society.” - Gordon Stanley Brown
Year 9
An initial rotation of three 6 week modules which focus on practical tasks providing an overview of the different disciplines within the faculty. Students will follow a module that covers engineering.
Year 10-11
Students currently have the opportunity to follow the AQA GCSE in Engineering.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Engineering Taster Lessons (6 session Introduction to GCSE)

3D Design
Design impacts the world around us and provides a creative outlet for those who are interested in all areas of creative three dimensional design.
3D Design at Cedars aims to:
- Provide opportunities for students to be creative through the practical application of iterative design and making practices.
- Equip students with the necessary practical skills and design knowledge to engage with technical challenges and design solutions in a range of three dimensional areas.
- Develop determination, independence and resilience alongside adaptability, common sense and the confidence to take calculated risks.
- Support students who aspire to future careers in design including architecture, motor and product design industries.
- Nurture an appreciation and respect for the infinitely diverse range of three dimensional practitioners and their work. Immerse students in technical language and develop their capacity to interpret both written and graphic communication.
Our hope is that through studying 3D design students are able to utilise a range of skills which will broaden their prospects and secure their success in both employment and further academic study.
"I try to be a positive person, but I'm also always looking and wondering, 'Maybe this could be done differently.' As soon as your mind is in a critical mode, you're halfway through designing; as soon as you start thinking about whether something could be better, you're already halfway through a solution." - Thomas Heatherwick
Year 9
An initial rotation of three 6 week modules students will learn to use digital design platforms and presentation software to develop and refine a design idea. Students will design and make a functional product using wood and plastic.
Year 10-11
Students currently have the opportunity to follow the Eduqas GCSE in Three Dimensional Design.
Extra-Curricular Activities
CAD workshops and seasonal workshop activities.
Workshop extension activities for KS4 students.
